Match Report

We arrived at the Southwell ground feeling good following a great summer break and 3 pre-season friendlies. The girls were in good spirits and ready to start the new season as u12s and get to grips with the new pitch size and rules.

The Hawks had 2 debutants for today’s game in Olivia in goal and Kcasey, an attacking midfielder. We stared very brightly, with some excellent link up play front to back. Jess and Izzy were unshakable in defence and when the Southwell attack looked like getting past them, they were either snuffed out by the defensive pair or covered brilliantly by Angel.

As the first half went on, there was some excellent passing moves, with Lucy and Millie controlling the centre of the pitch and passing into spaces for Bethany and Heidi to run onto. It was only good goalkeeping from Southwell, together with the woodwork that stopped the Hawks going 2 or 3 in front.

The Hawks’ persistence paid off with a lovely weighted ball from Izzy, allowing Heidi to run in on goal, only for her first shot to be saved, but she made no mistake with the rebound; 1-0!

As the first half was drawing to a close, there was just enough time for Millie, who had been causing Southwell problems all game, saw her shot hit the crossbar and kicked to safety.

After some brief words of encouragement, Kcasey, who had come on towards the end of the first half started the second the same way, by effortlessly gliding past the Southwell midfield. The Hawks were dominating all areas of the pitch for the first 15mins of the second half, with further skilful and confident play from Jess, well thought out passing from Izzy, all backed up by great battling by Angel. There was even time for Olivia to make a good save after a rare Southwell attack.

Soon-after, Bethany had the ball at her feet and there was only one place she was heading! 2-0 up thanks to a great Bethany run and shot. The score line quickly increased when Ava, who had been tenacious up front, found herself out on the left of the pitch; managed to get a cross in to an unmarked Lucy, who made no mistake from a few yards out.

A late goal for Southwell gave them a brief chance of getting back into the game, however another shot by Ava was only kept out by the post.

The final whistle was blown and a great start for the Hawks. 3 cheers all round!
